Free VPN in Opera browser

operaVPNs or virtual private networks are services that reroute your traffic through different countries. They’re good if you want a little more anonymity or are trying to find your way around geoblocks, but they usually cost money. Not in Opera’s latest browser, though. After testing out a built-in VPN in the beta version earlier this year, the company is now rolling out the same service on its main software stream. That means if you download the latest version of the browser, Opera 40, you get a free VPN with unlimited data.

Opera is the first major browser maker to integrate an unlimited and free VPN or virtual private network. Now, you do not have to download VPN extensions or pay for VPN subscriptions to access blocked websites and to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi.

If you want to use Opera’s VPN, you’ll still need to enable it in the settings, but everyone should have the option available, no matter which version of Opera you use. To turn it on, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings (“Preferences” on Mac).
  2. Click “Privacy & Security”
  3. Enable the VPN.

Alternatively, you can choose to use the VPN feature in private windows only. Just open a private window, hit the VPN button in the address field and just click ‘Enable’.
