Government planning to increase traffic fine by 600 percent i.e Rs.3000 to Rs.5000

The government of Nepal is preparing to hike the price of traffic rules violations by 600%.

Currently, Department of Transport Management is directed by Minister for Home Affairs Mr.Ram Bahadur Thapa. On 16 May, 2018 The governmental secretaries, inspector general of police, department heads, mayors of Kathmandu and lalitpur metropolitan cities and chief district officers of Kathmandu Valley at Singha Durbar gets together for meeting related to new traffic penalty for voilating the traffic rules.

The new traffic penalty implemented as by Department of Transport Management  is increased to Rs.3000 to Rs.5000 from Rs.500 to Rs.150 ,as from Mr. Ram Bahadur Thapa.

Earlier in 2016, the new traffic penalty has increased to Rs.500 to 1500 from Rs.250 to Rs.500 through an amendment to section 164 of the Motor Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 1993.

According to MoHA, the main aim and objective of increasing the traffic penalty is as to reduced the accidents, to bring the traffic sense and to uncontrolled traffic Jam in the city area.

The common traffic violations which can be influenced to penalty are:-

  1. disregard for lane discipline and traffic signals,
  2.  use of mobile phones while driving,
  3. parking vehicles in no-parking zone,
  4. seat belt infraction,
  5. mechanical modification of bikes,
  6. overloading vehicles,
  7. overtaking from the wrong side,
  8. violating one-way traffic rule and reckless driving.
